ABSTRACT

A large percentage of time behind the computer screen is spent on editing text. Investing a little time in learning more efficient ways to use a text editor pays itself back fairly quickly. This presentation will give an overview of the large number of ways of using Vim in a smart way to edit programs, structured text and documentation. Examples will be used to make clear how learning a limited number of habits will avoid wasting time and lower the number of mistakes.
Bram Moolenaar is mostly known for being the benevolent dictator of the text editor Vim. His roots are in electrical engineering and for a long time he worked on inventing image...

  • I love Bram Moolenaar's temperament. He looks so peaceful.

  • 12:34 :D

  • i am curious of what is vim's position with regards to the dvorak keyboard layout..

  • @PesceA And also don't forget that vim offer various plugins on highlighting, 'intellisense', refactoring, syntax etc2. Vim might not be the best in these departments, but sure it's improving and right now I believe it is enough for everyday project. Can't wait for vim 8. ;-)

  • @PesceA That's also what I'm thinking before I learned Vim. At first, I learned it just because of 'wow you're using vim' factor. I don't even think the real benefits yet. However, when I soon accustomed with it I realized that when I spent less hassle on the coding part, I could put my idea quickly, rearrange it with the rest of the code, and start thinking about the next idea, faster. Doing it with vim really reduce the fatigue level of programming, thus result in better code.

  • mhm I don't know why people think that programming is about text editing. Most of the times it's about thinking. I don't think we need advanced ways of manipulating text, for me I just need a good search in files and well nothing else. I use regex mhm less than once a month. Nice things we need are ways to manipulate programs, i.e. better syntax highlighting, "intellisense", refactoring, syntax aware editors are cool, but I don't see anything useful in superninja raw text techniques.

  • I'm a professional programmer and spend all day in VIM as well. This content in this presentation is great. However, all the people who made the comments that were downvoted were right. This guy sucks at actually presenting.

  • Yawn -- Oh its over --- The content might have been good - if it wasnt sooooo boring!!! So I didnt end up watching it
