A quick tutorial on how to play the intro to this piece. In a ridiculous/comical sports injury, I managed to rip off my thumbnail while bowling in the Port Authority this weekend so I'm having some difficulty fingerpicking. General idea and chords are there though. take care and enjoy!

  • Thanks a ton for making this video. I've been playing for 11 years and this song confused me just by listening to it. If you hadn't gone through the finger plucking structure, I probably would have played it with open chords a half-step down. I still play it a half step down without a kapo and it sounds fine a fret higher.

Maybe you could make a "Sweet Adeline" tutorial in the future?

  • Hey, thanks so much for checking out the clip. I'm really glad that it helped out. I'm hoping to get to some new tracks asap so i'll give sweet adeline a careful listen to see what i can come up with. take care!

  • I have a couple chord changes that I think sound a little better than the ones in your video. When I play a half step down, I'm able to do a chord during the verse that I think sounds a little better than your A major. Try going a half-step down and hitting 0-2-2-2-3 and then pulling off to 0-2-2-2-2 during the verse for that A major.

There are some other changes in E flat that I think is what he actually plays, but hit me up in a PM and we can discuss it further. Do you have AIM?

  • thanks! that does sound really nice (just tried it out). I don't have an aim screenname but i'm on gtalk from time to time when i have downtime in the lab. There are a few changes that I noticed as well after watching some live versions. I'm working on some B-sides and basement demos right now so hopefully i'll post em up soon.

  • This is great! Keep making Elliott Smith tutorials. Thanks so much....

  • no problem! sorry some are a bit sloppy, i have to iron out some audio/lighting issues and find some hd space. PM me with any particular requests and I'll give it a crack. take care and thanks for checking out the clips.

  • @NintenjoPower youve got elliott down, im havin trouble with his fingerstyles and odd chords... props man, good shite

  • what guitar have you got dude?

  • wow. good point. but interesting how he uses thesecond half of brian wilson's cchorus ("godonly knows what id be...") as the inspiration for the first part of his melody. And i just listenedto the songs backto back; I don't know if he "took" it from them. If anything it makes me respect Elliott more b/c it shares similar qualities but goes a completely different direction.

  • I don't understand the first parttttt I know where you put you pinky finger and the finger before that but I don't understand where the 2 other fingers goooo
