Roland SPD-S Sampling Pad Tutorial - Shows you how to use the Phrase Maker to record a short performance and make a new sample/loop. The video also shows why your final loop may not sound the way it does during the performance, since the SPD-S ignores effects applied to samples when generating the new sample.

  • Can you help me? I have purchased an FD7 and a KD7 for my SPD-S, but I have no idea how to connect them so that I can control my hihats and kick. I have looked through your videos and can find no info. I would appreciate it greatly if you could point me in the right direction. Thanks.

  • Hi - the KD7 plugs directly into the TRIG IN (1/2) port and the FD7 plugs into the FOOT SW (1/2) port on the back of the SPD-S. If you just use the standard jack-jack cable they will go in as Trigger 1 and Foot Switch 1 respectively. Alternatively you could use the Stereo-2xMono splitter cable and have another Pad/Trigger or Footswitch as well.

You can then assign any sound you like to the KD7 by hitting it to select it - see the video about assigning sounds to pads in patch mode.

  • You should make sure the SPD-S knows you are using a KD7 by pressing SETUP, right arrow until Trigger Input is shown, press enter, hit the KD7, use the + button to select KD then EXIT back to main screen.

Are you intending assigning a sample to the FD7 or do you want to use it to change what sample is played on another pad/trigger e.g. to change between and open/closed HiHat sound? If you let me know as the setup differs depending on what you want to do.

    Have fun!

  • Great tutorial.

  • do u need a card to use the phrase maker?

  • Fantastic tutorials, great help. Just a quick question on this though - once your phrase is made in this way does the SDPS remember the tempo you recorded at, and allow you to change this tempo afterwards, or is your phrase now just saved as a solid sample which cannot be edited in this way?

    Thanks so much! Mike

  • @trogular I see i can reply to my own comment... I tried creating an input bass loop in wave mode and it asked me to specify the number of beats. I specified 8 for a two-measure thing but the machine keeps recording unless i hit stop. Is there no way in that mode to make it stop recording and loop automatically? awesome if you can help!

  • Thanks very useful. I now understand I can't use the phrase maker to record a performance of an external instrument, like a bass loop for instance. I'm sure the manual has the answer but how would I record a loop from my bass or singing for instance. Is it possible?
