Soon after the instruments opened their doors, the Sun began performing for SDO with this beautiful prominence eruption. This AIA data is from March 30, 2010, showing a wavelength band that is centered around 304 . This extreme ultraviolet emission line is from singly ionized Helium, or He II, and corresponds to a temperature of approx. 50,000 degrees Celsius. The second movie shows a prominence with larger field of view

  • Great rare visual depiction of invisible forces interacting. Magnetic and gravitation forces follow the path of least resistance, which is spiral in form just like black holes or water down the drain. The ultimate common denominater all forces, all matter and light- circular in form, through time, looks like spiral. I know this sounds like sci-fi-- I am not a real scientist, nor do I play one on tv.

  • @clintweeks2000 No, the prominences take a few hours (3 or 4), see for example the clock in the video posted in "Double Explosions on the Sun Today" article (Jan. 28, 2011) on Universe Today website.

  • How long does one of these prominences take ? Do they happen as fast as this video shows ? Those things are HUGE !!

  • The sun is here

  • THE NEAR IS HERE!

    FC RULZ!

  • THE END IS NEAR

  • fantastico...gracias NASA

  • fantastico

  • Look Quo (scientific spanish magazine). In Quo there's an interesting report about solar explosion in 2013....you can find it in its website....

  • The crazy thing that most people probably don't think about is the fact that this prominence eruption became bigger than the size of Jupiter in less than 3 seconds. It takes 3 Earth's just to fit into the size of Jupiter's Great Red Spot, and probably (guesstimate) over 1,000 Earth's just to make up 1 Jupiter. This prominence would have wiped out the Earth in less than .0005 seconds, and would have wiped out Jupiter in less than a couple seconds. That is how much force is behind this!
