In June of 2009, Serena Auñón became one of only 9 NASA astronauts selected from more than 3,500 candidates. She has trained in Russia, supporting the ISS crew, and will serve as flight surgeon for NASA expeditions in the future. Auñón began her ascent while a medical student at UT Health Science Center-Houston and during her residency in Internal Medicine and Aerospace Medicine at UT Medical Branch. In 2009 she was also recognized with the Julian E. Ward Memorial Award for her contributions to spaceflight crewmember clinical care.
