Set up my small portable train layout in the church basement for our family Christmas party, Sunday December 27, 2009. These shots were taken after most people had left.

It's mostly Marx & some Lionel 027 track with 3 Marx switches and 1 Lionel switch, all manual. No wired blocks for two train operation, no wired accesories, just kept it as simple as possible. The manual switches kept everything interesting. Added the short bumper line for the trolley at the last minute, now i think it resembles some of Lionels old displays. Layout is 4'x6'x3/8" plywood cut into 3 2x4 sections. Very easy to move and set up. Besides the track, nothing else is attached to the boards. I call this my "K.i.s.s." layout. Keep it simple stupid!! Those were the words that went through my head as I put this together.

Engine running is the postwar 2037. I had offered it for sale at a flea market last summer, no one bought it, so I'm keeping it just for this little layout. Smoker works, but I forgot to bring the smoke pills, so, no smoke. Rolling stock is a mix of postwar and modern. Tender is a whistling 6026 although I didn't get a shot of it working, it does very well.

Other trains you can see are a red marx vanderbuilt & a purple one too. They are both custom paint jobs, the red was a beat-up old black wind-up. It now has a small lionel motor, looks great running, but doesn't pull much. The purple engine is a color my wife picked out, and the motor in that one is original. It runs great, light works, but again, not much of a puller.

  • I have the same station but it's missing the chimney and paint job is not as nice.

Does you whistle still work on it?

  • Hey Marty, Thanks for asking.

I got the station, with the track & switches in an old Marx set at an estate auction. Everything was like new, no rust or damage, looks like it was never used. Though I haven't hooked it up (the Lionel whisling tender on the track works fine) I have no doubt the station works like new. BTW, I paid a grand total of $5.00 for that Marx set. I don't run the train from the set, it still has the original plastic film covering it. - pretty cool huh?

  • Awesome!

  • absolutely beautiful

  • That is a find...!

I think I paid $5.00 just for the station. There is a whistle, in the station, works too. I'd like to post some photos but not sure how to. I also have an American Flyer set that my mother, god rest her soul, bought for $50.00. Cost me $75.00 to have the motor cleaned and original wheels replaced. Santa didn't bring me the video camara I asked for, but what's a 53 year old kid to do!
