The ship was actually so badly damaged - as my uncle, the L.I. (=Leadng Engineer) Carl Klepp has stated that the ship would and could not survive another battle, even with 'no other Allied ships out there', forget about returning to Germany. Langsdorff thus savedthe lifes of several hundred seamen!

What we know now is that a british shell had destroyed the equipment needed to clean the Spee's diesel fuel. At most she could have gone a further thrity miles and then been a sitting duck, pounded to eventual destruction. No, her captain did the best thing, the only thing, the honourable thing... and paid a heavy price for it!
