The same goes for hockey. In the NHL, if a player loses his helmet, including goalies, they'll keep playing until the whistle blows.
In college hockey, major junior (equivalent to I-A football) or other levels, players have to leave the ice if they lose their helmets or they'll be penalized. The referees will blow the play dead if goaltenders lose their gear.
