In the olden days comedians used to sleep together in a comedy bed and we never gave a thought as to their sexual orientation, It wasn't 'gay' then. 'Slapstick' they called it in those days.

They're acting gay because the sketch really only works if it's a couple planning the parties (why else would they always plan who to invite to parties at their shared house together?) and they are two male actors. So they're just a couple in this sketch, who happen to both be male, and thus gay.

What kinda of nerd cares for this? (Well, I do, but I'm a Hikikomori. I guess I just answered my own question. =/)

Id be inclined to agree with you but i dont think any of the jokes depend on them being gay. this is so well written without that aspect of it. So if anything the implication that they are a couple is just a minor element of the premise

I showed this to a friend recently and he laughed so much he had an attack of diarrhoea during which he threw up in my bath (shitting side-saddle whilst barfing over the side of the tub). The line about Scooby shitting over everything sent him into such raptures of mirth that neither his belly nor his bowels could cope and the mayhem alluded to in the sketch became a dreadful reality in my bog. It's 3 weeks later and I'm still finding dubious chunks in my loofah.

    True story, unfortunately.

I always assumed it's partly just that they're two guys and a lot of stories are based on a couple. And if they get one of the women who sometimes work with them to do it then one of them has to sit out the sketch, which maybe they don't want to. (And drag looks silly, it's a totally different effect and makes it a totally different joke)

I seem to remember Mitchell saying that he doesn't particularly like drag, so that may be the reason. Other than that I can't see there's any reason either except perhaps that the tone and content of the conversation society perhaps expects more from a gay couple than a straight one.
