Surely the message of this book is that everyone should leave aside superstition and belief which only causes violence, and all should have the opportunity to work and earn, and keep the fruits of their labour - ie property rights. And that dogmatic philosophys have no use, all that matters is what one does to contribute to ones local economy.

@ sidvidkid Sure, that is one option, but not the only option, for dealing with the problem Voltaire sets up. In avoiding the Christian rationalism of Pangloss' approach to life, doesn't Candide shrink from making the world a more hospitable place, while at the same time making his own life less enriched by cutting himself off in his own closed-circle? If there is no other option, that is a pragmatic thing to do, but he strikes me as someone who gives up because his prior over-optimism.
