As the ranking Republican on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, Senator Murkowski has urged the Obama administration to expand the role of nuclear power in its energy strategy. Murkowski made her remarks in a Senate floor speech as energy committee members in the Senate and the House of Representatives seek to craft new energy legislation. The administration has been resistant to supporting increased nuclear power plant construction to help meet the nations energy needs.
Jimmy Carter put the lid on nuclear, declaring that coal would provide 50% of our electric power by 2000. Thanks, Jimmy. From a land-use aspect, wind and solar (being only 30% efficient) require huge amounts of space - and enviros are opposed to that. Wind and solar are fine for peak, temporary production, but not base-load.
Some of the high cost of nukes is the lengthy review, certification and licensing, plus litigation caused by enviros. New nukes are smaller, more efficient, reliable, safe.
