It was a tragedy to see southern culture and livelihood so mercilessly trampled upon. My family was caught in the middle of it, many lived in Kentucky, Tennessee and Indiana. While slavery ultimately played a crucial defining role the civil war was also about economics and representation. The Northern culture and industrial capitalist economy was exploiting southern resources, money and livelihood to enrich themselves. Unfortunately it is the contest over slavery that is most remembered.
