O. Henry's "The Last Leaf"
Starring Art Carney, Sydney Penney, and Jane Kaczmarek.

As lingering pneumonia takes her will to live, a young girl decides that she will die when the last leaf drops from a dying vine outside her window. Her neighbor, an elderly artist frustrated by his inability to paint what is in his heart, follows the example of the Savior and makes the ultimate sacrifice to save her life. In doing so, he creates the masterpiece he has been struggling to paint.

  • All acts of kindness are not the monopoly of Christianity, but they are all the hand of God. (And Jesus Christ was His Son.)

  • @samsaz7 - being a member of the LDS church means taking all the good in the world and what good is already within men and then asking them to come and get more good. Period! Jesus Christ is the central focus in our worship and we choose not only to believe in him but to believe him and continue to seek after him and God's understanding. Some regard God as unsearchable or impossible for us to understand when we surely ALL will understand EVERYTHING about our Father in heaven we being children.

  • we actually study this in our english subject

we were told to read the last leaf by O. Henry and answer the following questions

but when i read it , it made my heart melt and i assigned myself to find it in youtube, i was hoping that there would be a short film for this, but i was not wrong!

after i read it, i already thought of finding a short film,

the last leaf is a wonderful masterpiece ..

(but on our book, susan named johnsy and her older sister is sue .. i am just a little confused) hehe

  • @yaomai25 - in cinema, they change names quite often.

  • I think you do the old man a disservice if you claim his actions were inspired from the Easter story.

I am an Atheist. Could it be that he gave his life to save a child for altruistic reasons?

I have always loved this story because it shows that any good person could do no less than give up their life to save a child. The Christian landlady was only concerned about her rent.

Jesus, if the story is true which I doubt was guaranteed a reward. The old man wasnt.

  • I'm not sure if it is based on a true story or not...

but as most Allegories go, only certain elements of this story remind us of the self-less sacrifice which Jesus made by allowing himself to die. Christians believe that Jesus Christ died to help men live. Help them have hope and the courage to carry on.

  • Oh great Redeemer - Jesus Christ!

He gave his life for us - I will always look at him and obey his commandments which are LOVE GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART AND LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOUR OWN.

Let us live for Jesus Christ. We can see his Hands all things. He is our greatest Example. He is The only begotten Son of GOD. The Alpha & Omega. The Beginning and the End. The Great Jehova. The way, the truth and the life. LISTEN TO THE PROPHETS - who testify of Jesus Christ.

  • Continued... For no reward. If the old man saved the child for a reward that would lessen the act of kindness, yes. Altruism is difficult to explain. All I'm saying is that its little or nothing to do with Jesus, God or religion at all. Acts of kindness are not the reserve of Christianity or any other religion is the point I'm trying to make.

  • @1madmartagan1 If Jesus was the son of god or god himself and perfect he would have no choice would he?

According to you he went directly to heaven and didnt die at all. We, as mere humans have the choice either to do the right thing or do nothing. You believe in god. I dont, but I choose to do the good thing for no reward whatsoever. I'm not convinced that I follow the example of others. Why dont I follow the example of the rich and powerful? I have free will and choose to do the right thing.

  • @clearly

    What reward was Jesus offered?

Jesus was divine. He had everything. Jesus choose to come and live as a man, and suffer and die. For what reward? No reward, save the salvation of others.

You don't know the story of Christ as well as you think you do, if you think Jesus was motivated by a reward.

And how is it a disservice to the old man if he is inspired by Christ? Are not most of our selfless acts inspired by the example of others. Does that somehow make it less selfless?

  • Very nice story, Happy Easter Day to all of you.
