The scary thing about is herons is that they usually drown the mammals before eating them to stop the struggling. I think maybe that's what it was doing when it brought the chipmunk into the water

@PrivateSchemers I've also heard that they will use water to wet their food to make it easier to swallow whole. Wet fur slides easier down the gullet than dry maybe.

No question. It's a chipmunk. The blue heron stalks them all the time. He's very patient and can wait for an hour or more until the chipmunk makes a mistake. He has taken one out of a tree before. He waits outside their holes and beneath the bird feeders. I do have film of him with a frog also, plus fish. He ate all the koi fish from my neighbors koi pond one afternoon.
