Three ragtime tunes for guitar. The Macclesfield Rag, Telementary Rag and a traditional ragtime melody. If you know the name of the last tune, please post in the comments below.

I am playing a 1997 California series Fender Telecaster through a Korg AX3000G fx pedal, using a fairly clean patch, which I put together using the computer editor.

I composed the first two tunes in 2007, when I was looking to include some guitar melodies in the gigs that I play. Alas, for me, the fiddle still seems to the instrument that's in demand. Consequently, my guitar tunes don't get performed very often. You tube seems a good place to post this video, which I recorded over the recent New Year holiday.

I hope you enjoy the video.

  • That was great Chris! I'm sure this is the first time I have heard you play guitar, I hope it won't be the last.

BTW, can you recommend any "squeak free" strings for an acoustic?

    Cheers,

    George

  • Hi George, the best thing I discovered a few years ago was Kyser 'Dr Stringfellow' Cleaner/Lubricant. I use it on all of my instruments regularly and it keeps the strings in good condition. It's not expensive, if you buy it on-line. I even use it on the fiddle, but take care not to over lubricate the bit between the fretboard and the bridge. Otherwise, you get slippage and not grippage :)

  • Great stuff. I think the third tune is "Whistling Rufus", an old ragtime two-step.

  • @olmmbill - Great, I think you've nailed it. I have heard 'Whistling Rufus' played a few times in a session, but didn't know the tune title. I seem to have got it mixed up slightly with the B part in 'East Tennessee' Blues....Oh well, that's folk music..

    Many thanks for your help...

  • Nice to hear an electric guitarr used like this. Great melodies and very well played! Thanks for posting.

  • @Thomasfiddle Yes, beats the sound of my electric shaver, any day....
