I have ammended my soil with earthgrow Humis and manure mix from walmart @1.49 per 40 lb bag. Yes I have bought many bags of that and have had great success with getting my clay like soil loamy. Once the earthworms move in, you got it made in the shade.

Screw Lowe's, what about the cooperative extension? Wouldn't they be able to help you find good growing medium at a decent price?

You have to be careful when getting grass cutting and leaves from the local county mulch dump, you may be putting pure poison in your organic compost pile at home. Best to compost from home You'd be surprised how much composting one small family produce in the course of a year. Grass cuttings and leaves can be added alternatively into your compost heap. A small plastic pail in the kitchen catches kitchen scraps, cardboard and newspapers for mulching in worm beds!! Happy and HEALTHY gardening!!

Recycle your own veggie scraps, paper and cardboard. Create the best compost --> vermicast, vermicompost. That is worm comnpost!!

I understand the argument against miracle gro soil, but it has worked great for me. No complaints for the past 3 years.

@RedSoxBowHunter soil with pine needles will be very acid . Do a ph test you get testers in any garden center . It would be very good to use for blueberries they love acid soil. Also other plants love acid soil. But a lot of other plants need say a ph of 6 or 7.

I use compost from my local County. They have two collection areas for leaves, grass, yard waste, garden waste ect. They give it away for free and it's good stuff to grow my garden plants in. My local garden center sells similar compost which is black dirt/mushroom compost mix for $27 per yard. I've have good luck and yeilds with the free stuff so I'll stick to it.
