The caan characters closest team mateand friend is rendered into a vegetative state after a violent assault .
Later In the hospital, the Caan character comes to see his friend who is kept alive on machines
The doctor informs Caan that his friend is kaput and would CAan conveniently sign the dismiss papers for his friends life-support to be switched off, as his friend is now seen as a useless product through the corporate eye.
Caans empathy has been fully resurrected and he finds reasons to keep his friend alive and has him shipped out personally just in case he still dreams or has a subtle life still activated
Also in this scene is displayed the viscious anti-empathic decision making of the coroprate boardroom where humans are seen as products for profit or debit .

Every time I watch it, it just gets better.

It wasn't just content to create a realistic brutal futuristic sport, it dared to put a social commentary to proceedings.

a Masterpiece. the 70s critics didnt get this movie ("to violent!"). brilliant dystopia. filmed in Bavaria, btw
