Proof of at least one animal's ability to observe, judge, examine, experiment, reflect on the outcome and draw conclusions. In other words: think.

  • I don't agree with your observation, and here's why. During the entire video you can hear birds chirping. Cat wants to get in window to observe/kill birds, naturally. Cat can't get in window because curtains are in the way. Whenever wind pushes curtains out cat makes an effort to get behind them, even at one point "loading" it's legs to jump, curtain comes back, cat cannot jump into window and promptly gives up.

  • @xXFraudXx You're assuming the birds had something do with it. It's a reasonable presumption, but the video shows no interest in anything but the curtain itself. Maybe she was wondering why the curtain sounded like a bird. Finding it isn't a bird, she loses interest. That she was thinking and solving that problem - whatever the assumptions inherent in it - can't really be denied in my view.

  • @xXFraudXx That sounds fine to me. I'm defending the thesis of problem solving. But not too fussed about which problem. :-)

  • cleverness is not the same thing as sentience

  • jdankzick: It's a good thing I didn't use either of those words, then. I just said they "think" and provided a video example of an animal performing problem solving.

Most *people* are unconscious of a lot of things, so we would have to carefully define sentience before I would apply it willy-nilly to every human. There is a lot of "lights on, nobody home" around these days. In many ways, animals like cats and dogs are more aware than people. They see things we aren't even conscious of.

  • All humans whose minds are not damaged by disease or disorder are aware of themselves as a being, and are capable of grasping an intangible, such as love or "God". If any animals can grasp such concepts, then they do so in such a way that cannot be translated into our understanding.

  • @jdankzick Then your dog doesn't love you....or you'd already know the answer to that. :-)

  • You're name is linuxluver, but the computer has Windows on it. Are you conflicted?

  • cute cat. we have 3 dogs- one is great at opening doors with knobs, the other is good at opening sliding pocket doors, and they make an OBVIOUS effort to combine forces to get all of the doors in the house open. The third is pretty new (found her in the road), but it appears that her contribution is going to be barking until I open the door. haha. Anyway, their use of team work is better than many people. It's cute.

  • linuxluver, your Lula is such a beautiful kitty. Give her a hug from me. :)

  • @linuxluver It's more than reasonable, it's probable. She made all her advances toward the window whenever the wind blew the curtain out to expose the window, at one point even sticking her head up behind the curtain to look out the window. I never argued she wasn't solving a problem, I'm arguing what problem she's solving. She's not contemplating the profoundness of curtains, she just wants to get in the window and can't.

  • Animals have been proven to have self awareness and the awareness of the world around them, and some dogs can learn close to 400 words.

  • The unwavering concentration!! I always thought animals had a very small span, 2 mins is huge!
