I love Rolando's interpretation of this aria - it gives me cold shivers. I have listened to dozens of interpretations and it is my humble opinion that he is best. Next in line is Nicolai Gedda. Love both.

@MrJeffreydunson Brownlee has a rich and lyric voice, can sing brilliant coloratura and is overall great, but honestly he doesn't really vary the dynamics too much in this aria. I truly appreciate Villazon's attempt to do just that. He sing wonderfully. Maybe bad technique has wrecked him, but he is a true and honeest artist nevertheless. His expression is thrilling.

Rika Nijhof-Jager.

I'll say it again. Beauty is in the eye (or ear) the beholder. I too prefer Kraus's version but fully enjoy both. I also think that there is certainly a place for technical expression and would never talk badly against technical masters. Having said that, the music that has moved people and influenced society has rarely, if ever, been the technically perfect. It is passion that creates the magic. Mozart's masterpieces are `probably` technically brilliant but are definitely passionate.

@rokdevil I don't know. There's something about him. People either like him or completely hate him with no in between.

Best singer of "Le pecheur de perles" i've heard

@penstu1967 i do agree with you.

@cimboldo you're right, moreover, his voice makes me shivering ..full of soft power and tenderness..it feels like touching the sky! terrific voice and absolutely perfect.
I'm just glad that I'm ignorant and can enjoy a great performance. I just love the people who rag on Villazon and say he's not a true opera singer. Tell that to all of the houses that have booked him over the years. If you are honest with yourself you will admit that Stars are not always the technically brilliant but often those that the public simply enjoy.

@fierysensual I'm with you 1 Billion% my friend, this is not about who is/was bigger/better, higher/longer notes & all that jazz, its about an art form, entertainment, by people who are good people, not rats in a hole, looking to jump over one another, the Opera is not any part of the rat race, why do people come on here and fuck things up? Why? What do they win? what is the prize? what do they gain? NOTHING, that's all, they achieve NADA & make ZERO friends! Have some RESPECT for ALL Tenors!!!
