An arching lightning bolt stikes the ocean from an intense lightning storm off Key Largo, Florida, Mike Theiss of UltimateChase.com captures this bolt from him porch. This was the first lightning bolt Mike caught on video in his storm photography career. Mike was 21 years old and captured this using a digital Hi-8 camcorder.

the "mini" lightning that you saw is called positive streamers which move upward to meet the step leaders when they "connect" then a lightning bolt forms. they however didnt connect to anything

Haha you should come to Tucson during monsoon season sometime. We get some AWESOME lightning. Phoenix too, but I only lived there a year, and the most spectacular lightning I've seen is in Tucson. Yeah. Pretty awesome.
