@qexec1173 Newton's 3rd law of motion. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. But since there are no expanding gasses, for a projectile of equal mass and fired at the same velocity, a gauss rifle should have less recoil.

@megadeathx Better said, any reaction has an equal and opposite reaction. The force of the accelerating projectile produces an opposite recoil force on the gun.

@qexec1173 Because of the same reason gas propelled guns have recoil: inertia. Any object at rest will resist force imparted upon it; and that equal/opposite force is the recoil. Not the expanding gas.
