He is called Oswald the Lucky Rabbit because he has proven his luckiness in a number of episodes and not just in dating someone. Perhaps the word "lucky" became irrelevant to him in the later cartoons which is why they drop it out of his name.

I like the first Oswald cartoons a bit more than the Universal Oswald cartoons. They changed the character a little too much. The animation isn't quite up to the level of the first ones.

@Jeffrizzel The UNiversals were OK up to where they redrew Oswald in 1936.
