@Denitrix1 If you cook it too long it will carmelize and become hard- I use the stove top and constantly stir the mixture on low to med heat and never let it get too dark- it should be a golden color. I use white sugar.

I'm arabic and we make this kind of wax at home for years. I recommend a 2:1 ratio of sugar to water.
