So the debate is. Some diamonds have carbon 14. How can this be? Science says diamonds take millions of years to form yet carbon 14's half life around 5700 yrs or so. Here is the thing. Radio active isotopes become closed systems once they reach a certain temperature. They effectively stop "aging". At least till they cool down. This temperature barrier is called the closure temperature. Since the temperatures in the crust can reach over 2200 C. It is not a stretch to believe those closure temperatures can be reached.

Most of the carbon 14 in the atmosphere is created with interaction of carbon 12 and cosmic radiation. Yet here is the thing. We have radioation producing minerals in our own crust that can ionize carbon found deep below the surface.

Here are a few articles i used for research:
http://articles.adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-iarticle_query?letter=.&cl...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radiometric_dating#Closure_temperature "used this one to find out about closure temperature"

http://nature.berkeley.edu/classes/eps2//wisc/Lect6.html "this one talks about some basic facts about diamonds"

http://www.asa3.org/ASA/education/origins/rate.htm "seems like it has tons of articles in it."

  • The bad news for Creationists is that diamonds are only found in volcanic complexes, and the igneous rocks they also contain are good sources of radioactive elements, which are able to top up the C-14 content of diamonds.

  • @SoundOfScilence One of the papers i read actually said there was more C14 then the models predicted in the ground. Amazing how far we have come with science, yet how much farther we have to go. These are exciting times. :)

  • Well done. I never heard of this creationism argument until now. Thanks for tackling this highly complex topic and providing a clearer explanation.

  • @tobyr3 You should have seen me when i first started looking into this. The wiki article, was the only one source I could find at first, other then creationist sites on the subject. Once i found out about the closure temperature phenomena though. Things really started to take off. Still have some unanswered questions, but all in all, pretty darn pleased with how it turned out.

  • Neutron radiation. If carbon 13 is exposed to neutrons, it can become carbon 14. This is called neutron activation. Fusion doesn't normally happen easily because positive nuclei repel but you don't have that problem when one of them is just a neutron. You don't need a high temperature to force them together, the neutron just bumps into the nucleus and voila, it becomes the next isotope up the chain with an extra neutron.

  • Science starts with evidence and makes conclusions based on it.

Creationism starts with conclusions and makes evidence to support them.
