@glisssunseeker This version can only be traced back as far as the US about a century ago but it is based on older versions of the song from Britain. Probably Scottish but maybe English though we'll never know for sure. It was known in Ireland too but became very popular there only fairly recently when Christy Moore learned it from Hamish Imlach the Scottish folk singer.
