There is strong support among the public in the US, UK and Canada for more research on geo-engineering technology, a study has suggested.

The survey focused on "solar radiation management", which involves reflecting energy from the Sun away from the Earth's surface, and received support from 72% of respondents.

The internet survey was commissioned by researchers from North America.

The findings appear in the Environmental Research Letters journal.

Writing in their paper, the researchers said the main focus on tackling climate change has been mitigation and adaptation, but the concept of geo-engineering had been gaining attention.

"Deliberate large-scale engineering to reduce or offset climate change driven by greenhouse gases... comprises an array of techniques that can broadly be divided into two very different approaches: carbon dioxide removal and solar radiation management (SRM)," they said.

"Most SRM techniques act by increasing the albedo of the atmosphere through methods such as the injection of sulphate aerosols into the stratosphere where they would reflect some solar energy back to space, lowering the global temperature."

Another reason I don't believe they - in this instance - were there to get rid of the clouds is because when they started spraying they were trailing in an empty patch of sky to deliberately cover it. As you can see in the pic at 0.24 there is hardly any cloud cover. Peace and thanks for watching. Any more questions just fire away.

Damn reply button not working. The skies did clear up from 2pm and the temp was minus 4 in Berkshire at night. I don't think the trails were there to get rid of the clouds since I believe they spray above clouds regularly to get their chemicals to be carried by clouds for wider dispersal. evey1 who came into work today was asked if they know about trails then told by me it was geo enginering.They could all see what we have seen for years and i must say they all took an interest.And when they went out for a cig they where taking notice of the sky.

we do not get the so obvious chem trail in Hawaii like this ,but the chemclouds are so thick though,its just a whole other style of chemical attack over here in the islands

@ReinhardvonHolst Can i ask.did it clear up there in the afternoon.It did here.BUT.it was bloody cold here last night minus6. Could the spraying 13th jan been to clear the skys of cloud.Seeding to clear skys has been done before. just a thought.
