Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question...

Q: Lately I've been really getting into the sounds of guitarists like; Larry Carlton, Scott Henderson, Carl Verheyen and Eric Johnson and they all seem to have a really easy time adding large interval distances into their songs. Can you do a lesson covering how to use bigger interval distances in both songwriting & improvising? Thanks...
Daniel -- Madison, Wisconsin

A: Most guitar players have to really force themselves to break away from the general confines of how we tend to learn this instrument. As we so often go about learning guitar using the common teaching methods out there, we normally learn how to play our scales in positions, where all of the notes are very close to one another intervallicaly. This will often cause players to perform lines that stick to close intervals like the major & minor seconds & thirds. After awhile, players begin to feel like they're stuck within a fairly limited range. Then, when famous guitar players like Daniel mentioned come along -- most practicing guitarists are pretty blown away at how cool the melodies come across when the interval range is increased substantially.
