The Natural Approach is a method for beginners based on observation and interpretation on how a person acquires his first language. It emphasizes on communication rather than on grammar.

One of the things which is very important and conclusive when learning is that the input has to be comprehensible. That is at least what Krashen has always said. Teach with a lot of comprehensible input that will allow the student to activate the acquisition process.

But I also think that even if the input is not comprehensible you end up learning because some kind of unconscious learning. I mean if you spend a lot of time listening to a language (in the country) in the beginning all the input is not comprehensible but you sort of learn something, the accent, the intonation, some isolated words, sometimes some information which is linked with non verbal communication and so forth.

  • Some people on the internet seem to have all the answers and the truth on their side, meanwhile the rest are just babblers. But to present an argument, explain it and argue with reasons is not a sport they do. What a pitty because it is lovely to debate and learn from others. Well, for those people, there is a better media where you may fit: TV.

  • It's really a sad state when the YT Foreign Lang self appointed (not academically attained) babble about Krashen in error and can't even find this video to set themselves straight (imagine if those people ever tried to do a PhD).

  • @christopheclugston I don't get the point exactly of what you are saying with this... maybe you could explain yourself a little bit better. These are all established theories that have no questioning at this moment apart of the logical evolution of the CLT and other modern theories like task-based, etc.

  • thanx a lot, so helpful ^__^

  • @AM90KW you are welcome. Many parts of the CLT come from this approach. Now a days CLT and the two development methis content based and task based are the most used ones. But not a long time ago, the audio-lingual method was the most used. Thanks for watching.

  • @simonfilm The referents are clear if you look at what the Foreign Language Dilettantes on YT say. There is a lot of babbling about "Comprehensible Input" and no understanding of what it means. There is also a huge disparity between their understanding of acquisition vs learning and what Terrel and Krashen meant. Obviously if they can't do a rudimentary "literature review" how could they attempt post grad degrees? (Side note: their linguistics understanding is even worse than learning theory)

  • You probably just saved my exam tomorrow! Thank you :)
