Part 2 of 3. "Palace Of The King". MGM was Bernie Marsden (Guitar), Mel Galley (Guitar) & John Marter (Drums) with Neil Murray (Bass) & John Saxon (Vocals). Bernie, Neil & Mel where all former Whitesnake members. This rare footage was filmed from the side of the stage. The 1987 Reading Rock Festival was a great weekend with lovely weather and some great bands. Also playing were Status Quo, Georgia Satellites, Magnum and Alice Cooper. Various Comic Strip stars turn up as Bad News (HEY HEY BAD NEWS!!) - Superb. Anyone else there remember this brilliant weekend?

  • That's very rare indeed. By the way MGM stood for Marsden Galley Murray and not Marter.

  • Nope - From the man himself "I started doing a few gigs with a band called MGM, which comprised ex-Whitesnake guitarists Mel Galley and Bernie Marsden, as well as drummer John Marter, though it was stressed that this was just a temporary band for me until Whitesnake went back on the road" I saw them at Reading & the Marquee Club, it was definitely Marter. Neil Murray was only temporary.

  • Let's not start a war!:-) Neil's a friend and I got it from him... I might have misunderstood though. Still, great footage and thanks for posting it! All the best

  • Of course not !! :-) . Do me a favour and ask Neil if they're going to do any more M3 Classic Whitesnake stuff. Really miss Bernie, Micky & Neil, thanks.

  • Great stuff, pal. Thanks for sharing.

  • Excellent, and thanks for giving us the chance to see this band at last. I missed Reading '87, but did see Bernie with SOS at the '82 festival. Marsden and Schenker on the same day - guitar bliss. RiP Mel Galley.

  • Hi Cathy,

Even though the sound quality is not top notch, it seems that John's got a really good voice. I have no clue what he did apart with MGM. Can you help with his discography? I'd like to check it out. Thanks and regards, Laurent

  • Thanks for uploading this, I tried with the copy John (saxon) has but couldnt break it up to fit. Great to see the performance was recorded. Was so sorry to hear about Mel.

  • I was here watching MGM, remember Mel Galley had his left hand in a 'metal claw wiring' from some accident. Can't see it here too well as he is on the other side of the stage. There's also some great footage of Vow Wow with Neil Murray from Reading 87 here on You Tube

  • I will! I am actually writing to him right now.
