Review by Rachel Chan

FURY is dedicated to autistic children, who communicate differently from 'normal' kids, but excel in particular fields sometimes to the point of obsession. It is the tale of the child of a Thai gang loan shark and a Japanese gangster. The Japanese Yakuza is driven out of Thailand by a jealous Thai gang boss, whom the Thai loan shark, a feisty femme fatale named Zin, works for. The Thai gang boss swears to kill Zin and Yakuza leader Masashi if they are ever seen together again. Zin tells Masashi to leave Japan. Without his knowledge, Zin bears a daughter she names Zen. Zen is found to be autistic, but learns martial arts close to the speed of Bruce Lee. It so happens that Zen lives next to a Muay Thai martial arts centre. Armed with Smarties, which she jiggles like prayer beads, Zen learns the techniques of the masters and eventually goes after Zin's debtors. Naturally they are reluctant to pay, so Zen teaches them a lesson about underestimating a teenage girl's powers. And what a painful lesson it must be, as Zen can take down more than twenty grown men at a time, providing comical effect with her Bruce Lee sound effects.

An interesting fact to note is that none of the stunts pulled are fake. "Jija" Yanin Vismitananda as Zen knocks her ankles, head, and falls down while portraying this martial arts whiz. The fight scenes take place in an ice making factory, a construction site, and a butchery respectively. And the guys who play the baddies? All of them real stunts as well. At the end of the film as the credits roll, footage of just how dedicated these actors are is shown. Expect no less from the director of Ong Bak and Tom Yum Goong. Oh, and watch out for the Pussycat Doll lookalike transvestites, who aren't just deadly with their killer looks.
