@MasterAsra More like none of them had the same name credit that Ziyi had/has. Plenty of fabulous Japanese actresses, just none that the majority of americans can put a name to.

@Brinah Its not like you're ever going to get a Japanese woman who knows anything about Geisha without studying it. Not like you're going to get a Geisha actress either. I think they should just get whichever actress is best for the role. If knowing someone isn't X out of character ruins the movie for you, you're just being petty. Substance should matter more than ethnicity. (Though most audiences didn't care until they found out)

Besides, no Japanese actresses with any talent showed up for it.

I disagree, the best scene is when Okasan shoves her hand into Hatsumomo's crotch, rubs the semen in her hand with a sly grin on her face, and then slaps Hatsumomo. So good.

People should get over the fact that Ziyi Zhang isn't Japanese. We get British people playing Americans don't we? And vice versa. It's called ACTING for a reason. Why don't you concentrate on the flawless performance she did rather than her ethnicity?

Ziyi Zhang is a Chinese woman playing a Japanese Geisha. There was like 3 Chinese women playing the parts of being Japanese. People can't tell them a part anyways.
