The following speech was delivered by top of the class student Erica Goldson during the graduation ceremony at Coxsackie-Athens High School on June 25, 2010.

Erica Goldson made a few people fall out of their seats with her valedictorian speech that boldly spoke her truth about the broken education system. Her speech is brilliant, spot on and important for everyone to read/hear - Erica challenges us to rethink how to value a student's creativity or uniqueness instead of merely ranking them based on a test score or ability to work the system (aka: memorizing everything)

  • This a brilliant speech that you would never hear a school administrator give. The biggest thing lacking in High School is the teaching of critical thinking skills that investigate the validity of argument and political debate, etc. The only reason Critical Thinking is not taught is because it might encourage students to challenge authority and that is not what school is for. School is meant to condition students to become obedient workers.

  • EVERYTHING IS A MASSIVE FUCKING LIE

  • yes

  • History books have been monitored and changed by the Government. It's a form of brainwashing. They don't want the kids to ask questions and critically think. They prefer the dumbing down of society. A society which is compliant. A society where morals or religion don't interfere. Great video!

  • @A0DBOB Actually I'd argue to disagree with that as well. Most of what the issues were came from government.

  • @Charlesperalo

Of course, hence why I said the government is not perfect. They did put that 3/5ths of a person clause into the Constitution, they did make it to where only white, land owning people could vote.

What the government does do good is force the changes through legislation, trust me if there were no civil rights laws there would still be massive discrimination in the south. It's sad but true...

  • @A0DBOB Well you must realize it's government that wanted to block them from teaching and legal jobs. Government that prevented them from owning land and many other things. Yet curing sexism from the market is simple for it has already been done for it never appeared in the market. The reason women weren't employed in the past is due to the majority of jobs being manual labor. Yet now women make far more if they do not have children. That's a personal trade off. Yet man is a peaceful creature.

  • @Charlesperalo

I am unsure how you think the free market cured feminism... I'd like to hear your side of that. As far as I am concerned the general public tends to gravitate away from giving rights to those that are "different" (blacks, females, homosexuals, etc). This is a common trend throughout most of our history, you may have heard it referred to as "Tribalism".

Given time (lots of it) I do believe eventually racism would have ended.. but that would be a long wait.

  • @Charlesperalo

The market did not end racism... at all. Do you not recall Jim Crow laws? Do you not recall Borwn v. Board (1954) where even in 1962 there were still states that stalled, counter-filed, used every legal tactic they could...

Now I am not saying that the government is in any way perfect (The military was segregated for a long time, homosexuals are just now being allowed to serve openly etc) but they do help push unpopular ideas.

  • @A0DBOB Well what if they cause all of that? The market cured feminism and the market made racism end. Things such as our failed public schools, the draft, minimum wage laws, occupational licensing and other laws created by the government caused there problems. Regarding home schooling I can say from doing a co-op in my education of going to school while taking classes online to teach myself programming and economics. The regulations kill education.
