Trust me, in WTF sport sparring "blocking" with hands is foolish. You will not succeed. - There is no punching to the head. The game is 95% kicking above the waist full contact. You will not succeed "blocking" with your hands in that game (Olympic TKD).

Starting this year (2012), the WTF is emphasizing punching more than it ever has in the past. WTF Olympic style tournaments will recognize and even encourage punching as much as kicking. Korean combat style TKD/Kickboxing is much different than tournament style and incorporates kicks, punches, knees, elbows, throws, sweeps and limited grappling. Many Olympic style trained TKD folks make an easy transition into full contact combat style Korean kickboxing.

@gomergilligan Well you're right, hands and feet is more effective. But in competition, WTF is a sport, ITF is a fighting competition. Thats why WTF is an olympic sport and ITF isn't.

@RuneScapeBelgium - I guess the question is "why" - since TKD incorporates both hands and feet?

@gomergilligan in competition, yes.

Yes Gomergilligan you are right that a mixture between hands and feet can be more effective but the martial art of taekwondo is an art of the foot, and also ITF is no contact and some attacks ive seen in ITF would have little to no effect on somebody.
