What Corrections Need to Know about FASD

Educational video targeted to the criminal court and corrections professionals to raise awareness about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), the leading preventable cause of mental retardation, focusing on the impact of prenatal alcohol exposure to brain functioning and subsequent legal implications. This video can be used at corrections facilities, social service agencies, courts, schools, and other public and private service agencies. Other health education resources are available at www.cadfp.org.
Partners in the development of this video include the Santa Clara County Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Task Force, Santa Clara County Superior Court, District Attorney's Office, Probation Departments, March of Dimes and Jumpcutters Video.

When you say they only understand "one thing but not all the rest", then let them learn just this "one" thing, do not commit violent crimes. That is only one thing to remember. Do not be violent. That might keep them out of jail.

The intent and reasoning behind the crimes is often different from other offenders. "parole is parole" for sure...but if someone's disorder compromises their ability to adhere to probation orders they are only set up to fail and to get in further trouble.

If they are released from prison and then "don't follow through" on their parole or instructions for after release, they do need to be brought back into the system. Society can not have inmates being released and then breaking parole or doing things that they are not supposed to do. It's great that you have this awareness video, however, parole is parole and the rules apply to all that are released. Getting them special training IN jail--that might change things.

I aM A 42 old person born with fasd-ill when given instructions ill understand a few of them but the rest didnt go into my brain-i hear good but the information often doesnt always go in...i miss what people say..
