Our Father who art in heaven...
An example of liturgical prayer.
Some of the freedoms of this kind of prayer
are
First,liturgical prayer helps us articulate
the yearnings of the heart that cry out
for expression.Sometimes it is hard for us
to find the words to say what we feel.
Second,liturgical prayer helps us unite
with the "communion of saints".The enterprise we are taking is far larger than
we are.Think of it: we are offering up to the throne of grace the very words that have
been prayed by followers of the Way for
many generations.
Third, liturgical prayer helps us stand up
agaisnt the temptation to be spectacular and
entertaining. A charismatic personality is
unncessary.Clever words are useless.Brilliant insights are not needed.
We pray the words that have always been
prayed.Increasingly,focus more on God and
less on the individual leader.
Fourth, liturgical prayer helps us resist the
temptation of private religion.
Fifth, liturgical prayer helps us avoid the
familiarity that breeds comtempt. The intimacy of prayer must be counterbbalanced
with the infinite distance of creature to
Creator.
