@BloodStoneCriminal In DeathNote 13, they said something about it, though someone stole my copy so I'm quoting from my occasionally faulty memory. I believe it had to do with up until then, everything was logical because it was all plausible, but when Shinigami are mentioned, he's shocked because it can become harder to catch Kira ("It's as simple as Light is the 1st Kira), and there are too many new possibilities to consider (at once).

Question: L is a person who's ideals surround the perception of realism and logic. In this mind set Shimigamis are not real...why would he freak out over something he doesnt believe in?
