A lot of people here saying the noise would drive them crazy. FUCK THAT SHIT!! Thats Music to my ears! And for you people that have never driven a car like this. When your busy banging gears and contemplating the next apex. You hear nothing. But, FEEL everything. There's more to it than the sound! When you start pulling some good Gs all else falls away.

ok, im not sure if youre aware that the "final drive" is the differential...and no, you CANNOT have a straight cut ring and pinion, they are spiral bevel cut, if for some reason this is the differential whining its bcuz tha pinion depth and backlash are all fucked up, and im sure he would have noticed that as a problem...but as far as boats go, i know nothing about them or their drivelines, i have no interest in them at all

but thats exactly what i said about the whine, speed not rpm related

Straight bevel gears are the simplest type of bevel gears. They were the 1st type of bevel gear arrangement to be used on Steam Engines, lathes, drill presses, early autos. Ford used them in trucks before 1950. The entire load is imposed on a very small area of the gear surface. This makes them have less friction than spiral cut. This makes them less desireable for everyday use, because they make noise & can't take the load that spiral gears can. Do a little homework & you will see.

You are right.

But there's another issue at work as well, Straigth bevel gears usually don't wear as uniformly as spiral cut gears .. and they need more servicing. They can also suffer from loosing a tooth completely during hard acceleration if you are unlucky.

Can't have that in a normal road car.

Even so, that is a pretty loud setup he has running.

Oh, and yes, bevel gear are used in differentials (someone asked about this further down).

ive done years of homework on this stuff, i do it for a living, im ASE certified in manual transmissions and drivelines, and i go to school for it...dont try and tell me i dont know what im talkin about, ive probably forgotten more than u know
