I own this camera, and while this example is somewhat exaggerated, the image stabilization on the HV40 is next to worthless. I shoot a lot of driving POV shots using a tripod set-up in my car. When using a Sony camcorder this results in footage which is smooth as glass. The Canon however jitters and quakes and records footage which is next to useless.

Yes, what you're seeing looks silly, but that's because it is incredibly exaggerated to produce measurable, consistent data. The custom-built stabilization rig is very similar to what manufacturers use to test these features during development.
The truth is, what you see is accurate: the HV40 does not have effective image stabilization.
