I wish there were more people like Jonathan in the world, who find insects fascinating, rather than scary. What a fabulous curiosity and sense of wonder he has. Yes, it's a cicada (Hemptera - True Bugs - yes, finally an insect that really is a Bug) - that insect that sits up in trees (worldwide) and makes that zzzzzzzing sound on hot summer days. It has four wings so it's not a fly; it has no scales on its transparent wings so it's not a moth. It doesn't bite or sting. Hooray for Jonathan!

no its not a cicada. their wings aren't clear like that.

Sorry, I've asked around here and everyone says it is. Maybe it's just a spiffy Thai cicada. I've tried to find the scientific name but haven't been able to yet. Anyone know? There's a closer/clear picture of it at http://www.flickr.com/photos/mcthai/200162856/

Yes, but they don't have them this big where I come from, so we thought it was cool. Do they eat them where you're from?
