Dog Grooming
Lucy getting Groomed
Lakeland Terrier

Often the wire coat is in one layer and pulling it leaves them in their "underwear" until a new coat wire comes though. The undercoat is soft and supposed to be.
It may take 8 to 10 weeks before the new wire coat comes in and is long enough to cover the undercoat

Ouch. Doesn't pulling the hair hurt?

No. It does not hurt, they may not like it, but it is not painful when done properly. Wire hair is not attached like our own hair or breeds with other types of coats. Many of my terriers like it.
Unlike some purists I do clip my dogs tender spots, like bellies, instead of stripping

  • when you do maddies head is she bald.? I have tried to learn to strip my wire fox terrier from books and videos, with little success. So I do a combination of stripping and clipping. When I strip her head she is bald just in front of the ears. Seems a lot of the people that comment here seem to know how to strip a wire terrier but I can't find their videos. Thank you for sharing .

  • You are correct....poeple who comment and have a differenet way to hand strip a wire haired terrier should do a video.

  • Sorry for the removed posts but my pc was crazy yesterday and so it posted the same answer too many times.

  • That's ok!

    Very interesting postings.

    I enjoy reading them

  • your pulling her new coat along with the old hair, your not suppose to do that!! just the top part of the coat is to be pulled as the hair is dead there, please get some proper lessons

  • you do not know what you are doing! this is not proper handstripping of a terrier its cruel and not good to let people think its correct because it is not!

I strip some of the top show terriers in the UK and I am mortified at what you are doing

  • glad mine is going to a propper groomer that looks like its being stripped naked poor little sod

  • You wouldn't have to completely strip her coat if you don't allow a blown coat and maintain the stripped coat. Read about it!

  • you arn't supporting the skin and you are pulling too hard. thats all you are doing wrong try to be gentle and use chalk for christs sake

  • OH MY GOSH!! This is so horrible, you are doing it wrong, you are not being careful AT ALL, she is not enjoying it at all. You are very cruel, yes I understand the benefits of handstripping, but this is just wrong :(
