This is the first part of my climb to the summit of Wayna Picchu (Huayna Picchu), the mountain that is behind the lost Inca city of Machu Picchu in Peru.

This video starts at the Guard House in Machu Picchu with me about to begin my climb to the summit. I then film my trek up to the top explaining the route along the way. It finishes with me on top of the mountain.

According to local guides, the top of the mountain was the residence for the high priest and the local virgins. Every morning before sunrise, the high priest with a small group would walk to Machu Picchu to signal the coming of the new day.

Be sure to check out Part Two where I follow the trail down to the Gran Caverna and the Temple of the Moon. These natural caves, on the north face of the mountain, are lower than the starting point of the trail. The return path from the caves completes a loop around the mountain as it rejoins the main trail.
