mike babb "the coming monsoon" ~ video ~

Another remarkable video made by my dear friend Ice (icecantata) in Chile to my song "The Coming Monsoon." This was the title track off my debut CD - in essence, an introspective collection of abstract thoughts that filled my mind while we were in the studio working on the CD. It is a bit different than some of my other stuff and in 2002 was chosen and went on a compilation CD of new alternative rock artists for that year. I've mentioned this before, but I was surprised to be categorized as an "alternative" rock artist because I have never once written a song attempting to adhere to a particular "style." In essence, what comes out, comes out! After all, in my mind, music is music regardless of so-called commercial categories that exist.

So anyway, this "alternative rock song" :) received a tiny bit of recognition then and got a little airplay around the world. However, the timing was not good for me as an artist since I had just stepped away from the music scene to focus on some personal matters -- family, etc. Thus, I could not promote and do the follow-up required.

As a result, this song -- along with most of my music -- remained idle for about 6-7 years until I re-released it toward the end of 2009 on youtube. Of note, Gene Kunkle an amazing Atlanta guitarist, is to be recognized for producing this track and integrating a unique classical guitar style that truly compliments the song. In terms of myself, I received a few good reviews from critics about my creative use of vocalisms on this tune -- most notably from "Mr. Phil" a long time industry writer in Paris.

Again, my sincere thanks goes out to Ice for the considerable time and effort she spent on this project. As she worked with this song, she created a handful of videos until she finally felt as if she captured the true essence of this song with this one -- and, as the songwriter, I could not agree more. Hopefully, as you listen and watch the video, you'll appreciate her hard work and effort in marrying imagery and music into this work of art. Thank you once again Itchy Knee -- you truly have a remarkable gift when it comes to making videos. Mike (April 2011)

Hat off Mr. Monsoon (cause that's basically a song about you isn't it...) to the very cool song, to Ice's work, and definitely to Gene's playing! Amazing, and I love the chords and the feel they give to it all. Not the usual singer/songwriter stuff one would expect!

!!!!! ........ Mike, I was speechless when I heard and watched this first time.

Then second time I just listened with my eyes closed and was still speechless. Now I'm typing this while I'm listening to it again, I must say that this is so far my favorite song of yours. Wow, I can write an essay about this song, but I won't bore you with it. :-) Your voice and Kunkle's beautiful ethereal guitar blend in wonderfully, making this song marvelous for my ears and soul...
