Excellent show! Ray Mears is a favorite, and the Bielski partisans are another... kudos.

Yes he gave cash to the man who made the shoes. It is a cultural expectation because Westerners are relatively quite rich compared to the Belarusan peasants who are quite poor. And a reciprocal gift besides. This may be difficult for a Westerner to understand but try to see it from the Belarusan perspective - they are quite poor. Giving them cash is a sign of kindness and sympathy for their poverty.

I don't want to bad-mouth Bielski, but one of the reasons they had less casualties was because their primary goal was saving Jews and not fighting Germans.
