Vergil diliberately allowed himself to be defeated by Dante, therefore allowing himself to stay within the demonic realm to face the demon which is Mundus, Vergil felt that if his Sparda once defeated Mundus, he believed he also had that power to do so.

Vergil wanted more power cause he felt weak himself even for a half demon with his incredible demonic power, Vergil felt it wasn't enough, besides Vergil had more understanding and knowledge of his father Sparda. Think about it Vergil's true intention for seeking Sparda's power, was to face the demon responsible for his mother's death. Vergil didn't actually get defeated by Dante, I believe Vergil allowed Dante to take the final blow.
