No, of course not. Not directly, anyway. But evolution has a way of weeding out useless traits, and passing on the helpful ones. After a few thousand years of walktopuses dropping a futile blob of ink before being eaten by raccoons, and squawktopuses flying free to breed, we'd have a clear picture of who's left.
Of course, the toxic waste we dump has come a long way. Could theoretically speed up the process drastically, if the right goop coats the right animal...
