Shown here are two F34T12 34 watt fluorescent lamps being operated on a cold night. This effect of dark rings moving across the surface of the tube, often changing directions or standing still, can be observed on low pressure dischage lamps (fluorescent and neon) when lamp current is not optimal, such as cold ambient temperatures or when operated on a dimmer. The striations seem to be a particular problem on the "watt-saver" type lamps such as these, when operated below 60F...the lamps burn normally once warmed up.
