Educational and Informative: These words aptly describe a seminar held by the International American University-College of Medicine, IAU in conjunction with UT Southwestern Medical Centre-USA and the St.Lucia Cancer Society on the topic "Microenvironment of Pancreatic Cancer".
The seminar held last Saturday the 29th May 2010 at the International American University was attended by medical practitioners, members of various organizations in private and public sector, staff from St. Jude hospital and medical students from different colleges on the island.
The presenters were Dr. Salah Din, a professor of Histology at IAU, Dr. Raghavendra Pillappa, an assistant professor of Pathology at IAU and Dr. Rolf BreKKen, an associate professor at UT-Southwestern Medical Centre. Dr. Din dealt with the topic "Structure and Function of Connective Tissue" paid particular attention on the role of the environment around cells in the body. Dr. Pillappa spoke on the topic "Tumor Microenvironment" focused on the formation of blood vessels and Invasion and Metastasis.

Dr. Brekken then delivered the keynote address on "Exploring the Microenvironment of Pancreatic Cancer in Preclinical Models''. He focused on critical areas such as the stages of breast & pancreatic cancer development. He made some startling revelation about pancreatic cancer in America. According to him, the problem in the US is of major concern to medical practitioners. He noted that there have been approximately 37,000 cases in the US in 2008. He also made reference to the outcome of certain research he carried out in his lab. on the study of Microenvironment of Tumor. The topics added a lot of curiosity and generated a lot of discussion particularly on development of new drugs and treatment modalities.
President of IAU Mr. Manmadhan Nair said that he is satisfied with the outcome of the seminar. According to him, the objectives of the seminar was to bring medical experts from different medical fields to share their experience and knowledge with students, faculty & health care professionals which will motivate students to get into research activities to help their communities. "We bring the knowledge to their doorsteps as many of them cannot travel to developed countries to attend seminars, to remain update" Mr. Nair said. He requested more participation from local organizations in upcoming seminars. He announced that in every semester the school will be holding a seminar on various topics in conjunction with other organizations.
