Not sure what mode you were shooting in with the shutter open indefinitely, but it wasn't the "Q" mode - how did you do that?

@SlingerDun  To keep it open indefinitely use the bulb mode.

Use a fast shutter speed in shutter priority S mode (On Canon , its Tv mode) Set to 1/400th or more, If you have a bright sky behind it , you may want to use a polarizing filter.
