  • The one thing you are probably thinking now, is, this guy is just a close minded twit who can't appreciate surreal descriptions. I really don't think that's the case because, like I said, there are many John lyrics I do like, but I'm trying to debunk the myth that Paul wrote poorly worded, sacharine lyrics while John was some literary behemoth. I think Paul, in all departments, understood storytelling and how even cliched words or tales worked well with the type of song he was writing.

  • now that you mention it, i beleive you are making a great point. perhaps not a who is better point but more a why choose a favorite food point if you will... yesterday are some of the best lyrics ever and so are his new lyrics for the end of the end... butu dont forget about helter skelter, speaking of ambiguity...

  • All You Need Is Love - "Nothing you can do that can't be done, nothing you can sing that can't be sung." Yawn. I guess that's why all you need is love, because nothing done is worthwhile; your talents will be eclipses by somebody else. If anything, John's catalogue always demonstrated how insecure he was. Mysterious lyrics with a poor payoff. I think he was insecure about his ability to tell a story and resorted to gimmicky wordplay that was full of sound and fury signifying nothing.

  • but i would be remiss not to remind you of John early beatles era lyrics or his first few solo albums.... but yeah now i see what you are saying. we have to move this so others can partake. make a comment on one of the mccrteny videos so i can reply to you.

  • Alright, so I thought more about this last night and am sure about what I said. Songs like Junk, Eleanor Rigby, Blackbird, Hey Jude, Monkberry Moon Delight, Calico Skies, the list goes on. These songs are so lyrically perfect and suited to the music with such perfection. John's songs, to me, always strove to sound intelligent or surreal, but lacked actual meaning, with one line no altogether relating to the next, especially in The Beatles' more mature periods.

  • firstly, you are totally making me and probably others rethink a long-thought observation much taken for granted for decades. i appreciate that. but this debate should move to one of the mccartney videos so others can participate. lets move it there.

  • Not exactly one of your more serious songs, but very catchy. I can't get it out of my head!

  • I agree with dpehr on this. beautiful poetry but utterly random across the universe.

  • Alright, well just to get this back on track, this song is very unique and your voice, now that I've listened enougn, I realize is very good. The song is very catchy and you should post some more songs.

  • Again, I'm being intentionally harsh toward John to push a point. I love a lot of his songs and often enjoy the ambiguity of his lyrics, but I've often felt his lyrical gymnastics belie a sense of insecurity in the storytelling dept. The funny thing is, from 1963-66, he was great at writing lyrics. Back before he felt he was a mantra maker. Back when he could write a love song with clever, funny or heartfelt lyrics. Back when he could write "In My Life," without using googoogjoob.

  • Example: Across the Universe - you have lines like, "pools of sorrow, waves of joy," which is beautiful and evocative and relate to words flowing out like "rain drops." You have this watery atmostphere going. But into a paper cup??? What the hell is the paper cup. Why are the lines inciting and inviting him across the universe. It's so mysterious. Possessing and caressing me...sounds like he thinks that sounds good. But at the end of the day, I have no clue what this song is really about.
