Sor Juana Inés (1651-1695) was one of the most celebrated literary figures of colonial Spanish America. Her beauty, wit, and skill at poetry and her amazing knowledge of books and ideas made her an instant celebrity at court. As an Inquisition judge remarked during an early 17th century investigation, respectable women "are to remain at a distance from the mundane affairs of the public and stay shut up in their hours."
Sor Juana, although not a rebel at heart, showed them who should shut up using her biting wit and curiosity changed the conventional boundaries for women's lives and spiritual activity.
